About The Icy Owl
The Icy Owl was first established early in 2002. The earliest versions of The Icy Owl were built using NetObjects Fusion. During 2005 The Icy Owl was migrated to Mambo, a content management system (CMS), mostly as an experiment to see if using a CMS would be appropriate for the site. Later the site was migrated to Joomla. Although Mambo (and also Joomla) work well, I felt that using NetObjects Fusion was best for The Icy Owl and back it went. Now, in 2008, I've decided to give using a CSS template a whirl and I think it is working out well. There's nothing quite like getting one's hands into the code.
The Icy Owl has always been a playground of sorts. In the past the site's content was subject to change at any moment on a whim. A testing ground of sorts you might say. Some things worked, other things didn't. Sometimes nothing was worth keeping around for long.
In 2006. I decided to bring back the best of the old content and to add new content. Some things stick and some things don't, but in the end I think that more good information will be found on these pages that will remain here for a long time.
Origin of The Icy Owl
The Icy Owl came into existence from a dream. Not a dream I had while sleeping, but just a dream of something I wanted to do. Somewhere I could play, relax, learn some new stuff and so on and so forth.
Why the name? I thought it was cute. Other than the name, there is really nothing here about owls. It is a fact, however, that during parts of the year that I am entertained by a pair of owls. They perch on top of the utility poles along my street, one owl per pole, and hoot back and forth. Owls in stereo! What type of owl that they are is something that I can only guess at. When they are out there hooting, it is pitch black and they are next to impossible to see clearly.
And it's cold out there at night most of the year. Icy cold.
I live in northern Nevada. Not quite the glitz of Las Vegas. But they don't really have anything that we don't have. We do have a lot that southern Nevada doesn't have: great skiing, Lake Tahoe, milder weather (nowhere near as hot here). We have casinos and shows that are every bit as good. We don't have much light pollution from the city lights everywhere so we can see the stars at night. And when you get right down to it, that's usually the best show in town!
Here's a pretty comprehensive site about my town: Carson City, Nevada and yes, there are eagles in the area. This is Eagle Valley.
