A Sad Day in the Neighborhood

News Carson City has a brief report about arson and a missing boy. The folks involved are my next door neighbors on both sides of me. The fires happened at the house to the north and the missing boy was from the house to the south. I never knew the boy, but that is not surprising with the hours that I have to keep.

During the evening my attention was drawn to the activity of the fire fighters. I was first told that they would be done with what they had to do in about an hour. Well, as it turned out they weren't done until many hours later due to the additional fires. Later, and perhaps while the fire fighters were still doing their work, a caravan of trucks drove up which really caught my eye. I first thought that someone further down the street was throwing one huge party to draw in so many vehicles all at once. It did become apparent some hours later that there was no party and that these folks were searching for the boy. This was also the first I'd heard about a boy being missing, and the time was now around 3 am. Danny and I both briefly spoke with the searchers as they'd wondered if the kid could be hiding in our garage or in my car underneath a down throw that I keep in it. I explained to them that our garage was always locked with a deadbolt and that I never left my car unlocked. It was highly unlikely that the boy was hiding in either place.

Not long after that a huge helicopter came in from the east and began the aerial search for the boy over the many open fields of sagebrush that we have here. The coyotes were howling too so there was really a lot of noise.

About 4 am our neighbor two houses to the north was on the phone with us as he'd been woken up by the chopper. That was when I found out that it was the shed that had burned (I'd previously thought it was the master bedroom of the house and I didn't find out until this morning that more had been burned when I took a look at the online version of the Nevada Appeal). Anyway, this was all happening in the middle of my day so I wasn't kept awake by the noise, and I can tell you it was really, really noisy with the chopper flying around and around and low to the ground until daybreak.

At the time of this writing, all appears to have finally settled down around here. The dozens of trucks and cars have left for the most part, although there may be one or two out of my line of sight. Rich likely has a load of paperwork to do if he had proper insurance on his stuff that was damaged and/or destroyed. Personally, I won't miss the noisy Mustang but that's just me not liking anything noisy. I've got a backyard now filled with footprints from the hiking boots that the searchers wear and wonder how long before the winds we get here will simply erase them into oblivion.

Why the boy did what he did is really anyone's guess. I have a few opinions without even having known the kid, but they're best left unsaid.

Rant!

Are you a parent of a high school student here in Carson City, Nevada? If so, please check to verify that Carson High School has your correct telephone numbers. Your child may be truant and you may never hear about it.

I am sick and tired of receiving calls about some kid's truancy on my cell phone. If I answer the call, it is only a recording. If I don't answer then they leave a voice mail. The trouble is that one cannot return the call to the phone number they call from. They're wasting my precious time and I can't be bothered to find their number in the phone book to let them know that they need to change their ways. This isn't something that anyone should ever simply leave a voice mail about - missing one's education is far too serious in today's world.

I sure am glad that I never bothered nor had the time to have kids...

Okay. Rant over.

Early Morning Snow

This panoramic photograph was taken this morning just before the sun was fully up. Also before my eyes were fully open. Coffee is working on that minor detail.

This photo is the result of stitching three individual photographs together, with a bit of softening added. What a way to start a day!

Not Often Seen

The Carson River is flooding at major flood stage. We normally cannot see the river at all from our location so these photos taken from my backyard just a few minutes ago are just for the record. The facility seen in the distance is the dairy and agricultural fields of the southernmost prison in Carson City.

Looking to the southwest:

This photo was taken in telescopic mode and the little black dots out in the distant fields are cattle. Somewhere between southwest and south:

Drenched

Getting home from work this morning was not a real joy.

I kept bumping up against 'road closed' signs as I made my way south through town. Lots of water over the roads, a few places with mud over the road and general slowness travelling as I had to backtrack a couple of times to try another route. Eventually I made way to the east side of town which is higher in elevation and had a clear road home. By clear I mean that there were no more of the closed signs to turn me around.

I drove much slower than usual as my brakes had gotten a bit wet and when I did have to use them it took a longer distance for me to stop than normal. Mini-lakes abound! In fact, water is entirely over the road just a couple of blocks from here but at least that is at a lower elevation. Where I'm at there is no worry about being flooded but there is the concern of being able to get out of here later on.

At this time I'm not too sure that I'm willing to even try to make my way into work tonight after the drive home this morning. I just cannot see the road conditions improving anytime soon, and most likely they will worsen. With luck Clear Creek won't demolish any roads this time around like it did back in 1997. That year I couldn't get home as that creek had washed away the main road into my neighborhood. This time it's still a big question whether or not it will wipe out the road, but the road was still there below the water when I drove over it just over an hour ago.

Snow, snow, snow and new boots

The first real snowfall of the season started last night. When I had to leave for work there was only a dusting and it was snowing so lightly that if it snowed any lighter it wouldn't have been snowing at all. I got to work and within 15 minutes the snow really started coming down. It snowed all night and is still snowing this morning about an inch an hour. We have about 8 inches of the white stuff so far.

I had to work a little bit of overtime this morning as the day shift was either late arriving due to the snow or had called in. It was, and still is quite a mess out there on the roads.

Before I could leave the building I had to take a bit of time and purchase a pair of winter boots. The shoes that I normally wear to work are clogs and there was no way that I could get out to my vehicle wearing them. The deep snow would've gone right into them, and more likely would've just sucked them off my feet. After a bit of time I found a suitable pair of boots to wear. They're a little large but a good thick pair of socks should cure that problem. At least they fit, are comfortable, and keep the snow out and my feet dry.

I finally got out to my car, knocked a good load of snow off of it and began making my way home. I hadn't really gotten out of the parking lot and found that there was a car off the side of the road with a tow truck fixing to pull it out. Just a minor roadblock that I had to make my way around. The rest of the trip home was simply slow and uneventful although I did see one mini-van that had gotten itself stuck. The roads are a real mess and it is hard to see where the edge of the road is really at. I pity anyone out there that is not familiar with them. The plows hadn't plowed anything and only prior traffic had been able to make any distinction where the travel lanes might actually lie.

The skiers should be delighted. Most of the ski areas up at Tahoe should be getting about 3 feet of new snow from this storm. Maybe more from the looks of things around here.
